The definition of Kung Fu (Gong Fu) literally means ‘learned skill”,
or “skill acquired through application of time and effort”.
Welcome to Heritage Kung Fu!
Kung Fu for Kids was founded and is taught by Troy Walzak; a Certified Master in the Chinese Martial Arts with over 35 years of experience. His experience and knowledge will guide your child on a path of personal achievement that can only be felt by having earned it.
What will your Child Learn?
Our Kung Fu for Kids program is more than just another after school activity. Baseball, football, soccer and basketball are all great for children. However they do not focus on character development. Children love challenges. The enthusiasm children demonstrate is surprising in an environment where discipline and good behavior are nurtured. Kung Fu for Kids is such an environment. In this environment, the following qualities can be developed:
Self – Discipline:
Kung Fu puts the spotlight on your child’s ability to concentrate and learn. As the child learns to control and coordinate all their movements, they learn to control their impulses, This is a natural method for your child to develop their own self-discipline.
Focus:
Using self-discipline, your child learns to focus and this will improve your child’s capacity to learn.
Confidence:
Learning builds a sense of accomplishment and, with each new accomplishment, your child’s self confidence grows. Confidence is an important step to help develop the mental and physical abilities your child needs to become empowered.
Character:
Once the child has gained a level of self-confidence we continue to teach values such as respect, honor, perseverance and integrity which is the foundation of the martial arts.
Perseverance:
Your child will develop a never give up mentality, a most important attitude to have. Perseverance is a character trait which will remain with your child throughout his, or her, journey in life.
Life Skills:
The character building encouraged in Kung Fu for Kids will help your child excel in their academic studies, sports and social endeavors. Believing in ones self is the most important of all life skills, and will enable your child to make the right decisions when they become confronted with negative peer pressure. Your son or daughter will become a leader ; not a follower.
Kung Fu:
Martial Arts is not a team based sport. While your child learns to interact with other children, the only person your child will be competing with is “them self”. Some students pick up on things fast and some slower. Every student is treated equally and is trained to the best of their own ability and potential.
There is no better way to nurture the growth of our youth than through the practice of Martial Arts. Kung Fubuilds physical strength, balance, coordination, endurance, as well as teaches self-discipline, maturity and focus. Master Troy leads his your students into the world of Kung Fu with a gentleness and a firm conviction.
Parent - Teacher Relationship:
You may watch your child in class. Though some feel this is a distraction to the student, we feel the student needs to learn to practice the material with others present, especially their parents.
While parents and friends are encouraged to watch class, we ask they remain quiet during practice times.
We encourage input from parents regarding any concerns or conflicts that arise. These can be simple scheduling problems, personality conflicts amongst children, or with how the material is presented to the student.
It may be tough, but no coaching from the side during class.
Student - Teacher Relationship:
Please inform Master Troy of any physical ailments your child may be having.
Students should arrive five minutes before their class begins.
When arriving to class, students must first salute and say “hello” to Master Troy.
The goal of Kung Fu is to strengthen oneself, not to get into fights, and no name calling towards other students.
A few things you should know:
PHYSICAL CONTACT:
Kung Fu is a Martial Art and even at the 'Kids' level it will involve age appropriate contact between students, Instructor and students, and props used as part of the teaching process
PHOTOS:
Please feel free to take photos of your during class. Video is NOT ALLOWED without Master Troy’s knowledge and permission. If your child is testing for a Belt or doing something special, you will be allowed to video the whole thing.
CLOTHING:
Uniforms are not required but we ask that your child dress in black pants (sweatpants, regular pants, tights etc) and top.
ADDITIONAL COSTS:
Belts: As a child progresses in abilities, they can be tested for the next belt level. Master Troy administers the test and if a child passes, they receive the appropriate colored belt. There are no testing fees, but the cost of each belt is $10 through Heritage Kung Fu or you may purchase the belt yourself through another source.
Staff & Sword: Once your child has reached a certain belt level, they will be eligible to receive training in staff and then sword. There is an additional cost for a staff or sword.
Uniforms and t-shirts: are available through Heritage Kung Fu but are not required.
BELT TESTING:
Master Troy determines when a student is ready to take a Belt Test and will first schedule a Practice Belt Test (and sometimes a Practice, Practice Belt Test) to see what still needs to be worked on and also to give the child a chance to see what testing will be like. And then when Master Troy thinks a student is ready, he will schedule the actual Test. There is no rush or pressure to test.
White Belt is the first Belt that can be earned. The belts then progress through Yellow, Orange, Blue, Green, Red, Brown and Black.
To earn a Belt, a student must be able to do everything listed on the Test Sheet - samples below.
Master Troy is looking forward to working with your child! Please don't hesitate to contact us if you ever have any questions or comments.
